Some 30,000 UK (2010) operations by NHS and private sector and 950,000 experimental operations in the USA (2010) performed on poorly informed patients, form a profitable business for spinal surgeons (see
Rise in spinal fusion surgeries may be driven partly by financial incentives, study says). However, they often result in irrevocable, life-crippling FAILED BACK SYNDROME with irreversible chronic pain. Currently some cases have been investigated in the USA and refused reimbursement by Medicare. Here they are a couple of articles that show that:
Yet, in 45 years of clinical practice, I have non-surgically cured over 95,000 patients and invented a revolutionary patented system of SPINAL MOBILISERS which helped thousands of people who had the common sense to use it. This is currently the world's best solution. Regrettably, other poorly informed patients choose surgery, with serious consequences.
COMMENTS ON WORLDWIDE SPINAL CARE EFFICIENCY
In our experience ORTHOPAEDIC MEDICINE is the only effective spinal speciality: Manipulative Therapists are specialists in a Maitland system known as Manipulative Therapy. The probability of cure using Orthopaedic Medicine is 99.5%, while that of spinal surgery amounts to 0.25-0.3% (Professor Wadell). Other spine-related procedures (Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy) are basic and ineffective, especially in chronic conditions.
Toxic drugs are 100% ineffective in spinal conditions (phoney palliation), except causing addiction..., e.g. opiods etc. (60,0000 died last year as published in the media).
Spinal care is presently in a pathetic state. This is due to clinical incompetence and lack of specialist care, leading to misdiagnosis, followed by mistreatment. Professionals with various medical backgrounds are providing non-specialist care.
Spinal disorders are mechanically-based, due to SKELETAL DEFORMITY/DISC/NERVE PATHOLOGY and yet they are commonly (but falsely) diagnosed by radiography as symptomatic conditions such as: sciatica, slipped disc (bulging, herniated, prolapsed, degenerated), stenosis, osteoarthritis, facet syndrome, sacroiliitis. These diagnostic terminologies are clinically meaningless. X-rays are clinically accurate at 5% and MRI at 25%-40%.
PATHOLOGY has confirmed that all adult spines are skeletally deformed, hence spinal conditions are either asymptomatic or symptomatic, depending upon causative factors (congenital deformity, trauma or both) and yet this is commonly ignored by supposed clinical experts, who treat and operate on desperate patients.
Surgical specialities are out-of-date (fusion procedures are 90 years old) and basically ineffective. The reality is that causative mechanical trauma is evidenced in 99.5% of all conditions and as such it is curable non-surgically, at this probability level.
The above is based upon two factors: clinical diagnosis (examination + pathology history) and specific follow-up treatment, by eliminating symptoms and curing the cause, although some pathology causes may not be curable due to complex bone deformities and basic, non-specialist care (medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, physiotherapeutic and botched surgeries: FAILED BACK SYNDROMES).
The essential factor is physical CLINICAL EXAMINATION (complex dynamic motion), followed by diagnosis. Any "surgical diagnostic tests" without prior examination are clinically false and over 85% of spinal tests are clinically meaningless. False surgical procedures and exploratory operations include discectomies, artificial disc replacements, laminectomies, fusions and keyhole interventions. Post-surgical failures are then followed-up by intensive, totally ineffective rehabilitation/physiotherapy. The ex-President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Professor Porter (YEAR...) stated that "non-life threatening conditions are subjected to life-threatening procedures". Yet, only up to 0.5% disorders may require surgery. Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr. Wadell cites even less, just 0.2%-0.3%. Well known objective researchers: Nachemson, Deyo, Weinstain, Fairbanks, Wilson, and others as well as myself have called for restraint, to no avail.
There is an acute lack of specialist training programmes in Orthopaedic Medicine, both in the UK and in USA. Only 10-15 spinal surgeons have been trained in the UK. The NHS is a typical example of ineffective non-specialist spinal care, having no Spinal Specialists (there is a very small number of trained Manipulative Therapists). The treatment provided is the same for all patients, starting with X-ray radiography, without relating specific pathology to specific techniques. Only basic care is provided and £1.5 billion per annum is wasted on inappropriate osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, physiotherapy and surgical care. These treatments are totally ineffective particularly in chronic disorders and with regard to serious " red flag" pathology.
However, an adequate number of trained Spinal Specialists would result in a financial threat to both medical surgical hardware companies and pharmaceutical companies, who make large financial profits from surgical procedures (27.5 billion USD from surgical hardware in 2009-2010). Nevertheless, a small group of ethical surgeons refuse to use such hardware.
FINAL ADVICE (USE EFFECTIVE SELF-CARE/CURE)
It is estimated that 4-10 million of the UK population suffer from back pain, and yet most people will neither seek a second opinion, nor rely on specialist diagnosis or use spinal mobilisers, obtainable through www.spinalbackrack.com.
Many of them are unfit, overweight, smokers, sometimes alcohol-dependent consumers who choose to invest in their own addiction instead of a specialist cure, which could improve their health and quality of life. Many complain about failed treatment on NHS or poor non-specialistic care and failed surgeries and do nothing about it...?
My advice to potential patients is: please do not waste my clinic time with trivial enquiries. If you are a genuine patient, please simply book up for a consultation. We do not treat or cure via the internet or over the phone: that would not work. A consultation is for a purpose: to be specialist-examined and receive diagnosis. Additionally, you should use our specialist self-care products, which can be ordered from Back Rack range (www.spinalbackrack.com). Why suffer? Save and take care of your spine.
